At our center, students learn through computerized billing simulations how to create, save, retrieve, edit, and maintain patient files. In addition, post payments to patient accounts, produce insurance claim forms, correct and resubmit rejected claims, produce insurance claim activity reports and enter electronic claims. Topics covered include: current procedural terminology, international classification of diseases, clinical modification, healthcare procedure coding system, resource-based relative value scale, insurance form preparation, Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Workers’ Compensation, No Fault, HMO’s, diagnosis-related groups, peer review organizations, and ambulatory patient groups. Students will also learn Medical & Insurance Terminology & Abbreviations, Duties of the Medical Biller, Procedures For Insurance Forms Completion, HIC Universal Claim Form, ADA Forms, Workers Compensation Forms & No Fault, Superbill, Medicaid/Medicare, Medical Coding: CPT Coding, HCPCS, ICD-9CM, Coding Systems E & V Modifiers, Computerized Medical Billing Software, Audit Trails, Payment Follow-up Methods, Insurance Company Policies, Insurance Follow-up Procedures, Title XIX, CPT4, Dental, Campus. The course also includes application usage of several medical billing & coding software such Medisoft and others as well as Electronic Health Records (EHR). Students are individually prepared for National Certification as part of the course and the course includes a 180 hour internship program on completion accomplished within one of several major medical center associations. This is an accelerated comprehensive course in the field of Physician and Allied Healthcare Aides with a focus on both the Clinical and Administrative Components of the traditional program. The course includes a non-concentrated or basic level Medical Office Administrative Component with skill level enhancements for working in the medical office environment such as training in Microsoft Office (word, excel, access, PowerPoint), keyboarding, front office reception skills, computerized medical billing and coding simulations, pre- and post-payment adjustments, and insurance claim form preparations. This is then followed by enhancement of Clinical Skills and Procedures, Routine Patient Screening and Preparation Protocols, Medical Terminology, Basic Anatomy/Physiology, Nutrition, Infection Control, Universal Precautions and Stat Testing Protocols. Students are individually prepared for National Certification as part of the course and the course includes a 60 hour internship program on completion accomplished within one of several major medical center associations. The secondary focus of this course will cover the usage and management of health information and the electronic health record (EHR). This course will introduce the students to the use of health information and the electronic health record for any setting within the health care industry from acute, ambulatory, long term, home health, specialty, population health, and personal health that encompass the continuum of care. This course will provide students with a practical understanding of what an electronic health record specialist is and how important they are in the job market today. This course will enable the students to assemble the patient’s health record and ensure all information is complete, properly identified and authenticated. EHR Specialist’s duties will vary with size and specialty of the facility in which they may work. Many can specialize in varying areas or one aspect of the EHR such as entry-level coders, encoding within a hospital setting, abstractors and or coding specialist, HIPAA Compliance Officers or HIM (Health Information Managers) and be over entire departments within larger healthcare facilities
