Jobs for America’s Graduates New Jersey (JAG NJ) is part of the national Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) initiative. JAG’s mission is to help young people of great promise succeed both in school and on the job, leading to productive and rewarding careers. In the last four decades, JAG has helped more than 1.5 million vulnerable youth and young adults nationwide overcome significant economic, emotional, social, and academic challenges. JAG NJ is implemented as an elective, credit-bearing course in partnering high schools (Newark: Barringer High School, West Side High School, Shabazz High School, Weequahic High School; Carteret High School; New Brunswick Adult Learning Center C.A.R.E.S Program; Passaic High School; Vineland High School; and Pinelands Regional High School) and alternative education program (Leaders for Life in Newark). The objectives of the program are to ensure a minimum of 90% of participating seniors graduate from high school, at least 35% pursue post-secondary education and that at least 60% of the graduates who are working are engaged in full-time employment.

IBEW Local 164 offers a five-year apprenticeship training program that is administered jointly with the Bergen-Essex-Hudson Division of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA). Electrical apprentices in Local 164 attend school during the day on a full time, paid basis, with instruction provided by a staff of full time paid professional instructors. To achieve Journeyman status, all five years must be successfully completed, as well as satisfactory performance on the rigorous final apprenticeship examination.

The New Jersey Construction Craft Laborers' Apprenticeship Program is an innovative labor-management fund that recruits and trains men and women for careers as a Union Laborer. NJCCLAP is the state's only federally approved apprenticeship program for construction craft laborers. Through a combination of classroom and on-the-job training, new members gain the skills to become a Construction Craft Laborer. LIUNA requires all new members to participate in a comprehensive apprenticeship program, consisting of 4,000 hours of on the job training with an additional 400 hours of classroom training. Through this program, men and women gain the necessary skills to building a career. All training is provided free of charge to qualified candidates, and apprentices are paid according to a schedule based on training and experience. Pay raises are given after each period of approximately 1,000 hours of work and training.

The training starts when a man or woman enters the program and is then considered an apprentice. The constant mix of field experience and formal instruction for 4 years gives the apprentice the developed skills required to become a mechanic.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will receive 32 college credits, a diploma from the NJ Dept. of Labor and the United Association, Universal CFC certification, OSHA 30 training, UA STAR HVACR Mastery certificate as well as various other certificates pertaining to the trade.

The apprenticeship program of the IEC is a four-year program combining classroom instruction and on-the-job training sponsored by the New Jersey Apprenticeship & Training Program. Students spend the first 600 hours (junior phase) in a classroom setting learning theory and practical instruction on a mannequin. For practical testing, students are invited to bring models to class for hair cutting and hair coloring. Students transition to the student salon for the second set of 600 hours (senior phase) where they are permitted to work on the general public under the supervision of licensed New Jersey educators. The senior phase of the training also includes special preparation to pass the NJ State Board Licensing Exam and job search techniques including building an online portfolio.

Skin Care Program

The curriculum for the 600-hour Skin Care Specialty Course consists of instructional units and clinical practice. The skin care specialty course includes field trips to the International Dermal Institute where professional aestheticians perform demonstrations and give lectures utilizing Dermalogica products. A wellness trip is organized to discuss the mind/body connection and the benefits of healthy eating and exercise. Students travel to makeup counters at Sephora, Lush, Bare Minerals, and Nordstrom where they learn product knowledge and discuss price points. Students also travel to a medical spa to learn about career opportunities in that avenue of the industry. Students are invited to attend the International Beauty Show as well as The Makeup Show in NYC.

Nail Design Program

Students enrolled in the Nail Program spend the first 150 hours training in both theory and practical subjects in the classroom. During the second half of the course, students transition to work on the floor of the Nail Studio. PB Cosmetology Education Centre opens the Nail Studio to the public and students perform nail services under the supervision of licensed New Jersey nail design educators. PB Cosmetology Education Centre issues its students a comprehensive nail kit and textbook package. The kit consists of files and implements, adhesives, acrylic application, nail polish, gel color starter kit, a cold wax kit, and a 36 watt UV light. The kit is packed in a durable carrying case that holds everything securely in place.
